Subaru . How to Find Gear Ratios on a JeepDepending upon the year and model of a Jeep, you can find some gear ratios printed prominently displayed underneath the vehicle on a metal plate. Replacing certain equipment on your Jeep can cause its gear ratio to change over time, rendering the information on the metal plate inaccurate. At the time of assembly, each Jeep has a gear ratio based on the parts used. A reliable method of locating the current gear ratio involves raising the rear end of the Jeep and observing the rotations of the drive shaft. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Two large bricks or two tire wedges Car jack Chalk Calculator Step by Step : 1 Wedge a large brick or vehicle tire wedge in front of each front tire to prevent your Jeep from rolling forward. 2 Place the transmission into neutral to allow viewing of the revolutions of the wheel and driveshaft. Elevate the back end of the Jeep using a car jack. 3 Mark an area of the tire with a piece of chalk. Mark an area of the drive shaft as well. The mark provides a point of reference when counting the revolutions of the tire and the drive shaft. 4 Locate the drive shaft of the vehicle. Use the drive shaft photo link below in the resources section to help identify the drive shaft. 5 Turn the tire 10 full revolutions while watching the driveshaft. Count the number of revolutions the drive shaft made during the 10 tire revolutions. If you lose count or want to double-check the number of drive shaft rotations, simply repeat this process. 6 Divide the number of gear shift revolutions by half of the total tire revolutions. The resulting number represents your Jeep's gear ratio. 7 View this example when making your calculations: If the gear made 20 revolutions, and you rotated the tire 10 revolutions, divide one-half of the number of tire revolutions (five) into 20 (the number of gear revolutions) to calculate the gear ration---in this instance, four. Use a calculator if necessary. Resources4 Wheel Drive & Sport Utility: 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon DriveshaftJeep Horizons: RPM vs. Gear RatioManoian: Gear Ratio Calculator
Subaru . How to Figure the Gear Ratio in the Rear End on my TruckRear end gear ratio has a direct effect on gas mileage, towing ability and acceleration. A low (numerically higher) gear ratio will give you better acceleration and towing power because the engine is turning at a higher RPM for a given speed. A high (numerically lower) gear ratio will give you better gas mileage because the engine is running at a lower RPM for a given speed. For instance, a low-geared rear end may turn 3,500 RPM at 70 miles per hour, where a higher-geared rear end turns 2,500 RPM at 70 miles per hour. There are a couple of ways to determine your rear end gear ratio. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Wheel chocks Jack Jack stands Piece of chalk Drain pan Ratchet and socket set CalculatorApproximate Method Step by Step : 1 Place wheel chocks in front of the front wheels. Shift the transmission into neutral. 2 Raise the rear of the truck with a jack and support it on jack stands. 3 Mark a line on the driveshaft near the rear axle. Mark a line on the tire pointing straight down. 4 Turn the driveshaft one full turn. While you do this, have an assistant watch the mark on the tire. The tire will turn more than two full turns for one turn of the driveshaft, probably more than three turns. You will have to estimate how much more the tire turns past the last complete turn. Turn this amount into a decimal fraction. For instance, if the tire turns 3-1/4 turns, it would be 3.25, which is close to a common ratio of 3.23. Exact Method Step by Step : 1 Set a drain pan under the rear axle. Remove the rear axle cover and catch the gear oil in the drain pan. 2 Place a chalk mark on the large ring gear that sits vertically in the rear end housing. Place a chalk mark on the small pinion gear that engages the ring gear. This gear is what the driveshaft attaches to. 3 Instruct your assistant to slowly turn the driveshaft while you count the number of teeth on each gear. Write down the number of teeth for each gear. Use a calculator to divide the large number by the small number. This will give you the gear ratio. For instance, if you have 40 teeth on the ring gear and 13 teeth on the pinion gear, divide 40 by 13 to get 3.0769, rounded to 3.08, which happens to be a common gear ratio. Tips & Warnings If you are looking for more pulling power and better acceleration, move to a lower (numerically higher) gear ratio, for instance, from 3.08 to 3.50. Note that your engine will turn more RPMs at a given speed than it used to, and your freeway mileage may go down a bit. If you are looking for better freeway mileage, you want to go the opposite way. This will lower your engine RPM at a given speed, but acceleration will suffer. For reference, here are some common gear ratios: 2.73, 3.08, 3.23, 3.50, 3.73, 3.91, 4.11, 4.13 and 4.56. The 2.73 through 3.91 ratios are common to domestic trucks. The 4.11 through 4.56 are common to Japanese trucks. There are many aftermarket options when it comes to gear ratios. *" I • ^ PointLower arm ^^ B W of load Toe involves placing your tires so that they are properly positioned parallel to the frame when driving down the road. Some cars call for a little toe-in (tires pointing inward— see Figure 19-6), while others are set with a little toe-out (tires pointing outward). The result should be a nice, straight track when the car is moving quickly. On some front-wheel drive cars, the manufacturer may set the rear tires with a little toe-in and the front tires with a little toe-out so that the tires are parallel to the frame when the vehicle is in motion. 910

If you turn to the right, the right front tire needs to turn at a slightly greater angle than the left front tire. Your car's steering arms accommodate this feat. (See Figure 19-7.) If your tires "squeal" sharply on turns, one of your car's steering arms may be your problem. How do you know if your wheels need aligning? Look at your tires to see whether they show any of the tread-wear patterns that I discuss in "Checking your tires for wear," and pay attention to how your car steers and handles. Does it pull to one side? Does the steering feel loose and sloppy? Is your car hard to handle after a turn? If your tires show any unusual wear patterns and/or you answered yes to any of these questions, your car probably needs an alignment. Subaru . What does a Learner's permit allow you to do?

Just stand outside your vehicle, near the door on the driver's side. Stick your hand through the open window and move the steering wheel, with your eye on the left front tire. If you can move the steering wheel at all before the tire starts to move, then you need to have both your steering and alignment checked. There should be no "play" in the steering wheel before the signal is transmitted to the tires. As you drive your car, be alert to signs that it isn't handling as easily as before. If the vehicle seems to have a mind of its own and begins to resist you on turns (and pulling out of turns), take a good look at your tires for signs of wear caused by misalignment. Checking your tires for tiear You should check your tires for wear at least once a month and before and after long trips. To determine whether you need to (a) buy new tires, (b) have your wheels balanced, (c) have your wheels aligned, or (d) change your driving habits, simply read your tire treads for clues. Table 19-1 and Figure 19-8 show you what to look for. Subaru . Where are relays used in a car?
